EA on India’s News 9 — Trump Administration’s 50% Tariff and Trash Talk of “Dead Economy” India
UPDATE, AUG 29:
For a different perspective on Donald Trump’s 50% tariff punishment of India, I joined Pakistan’s PTV World on Wednesday for a 30-minute discussion.
I set out India’s position and options amid the “shakedown” by Trump and advisors such as Peter Navarro. I consider the regional context, including Pakistan’s flattery of Trump to gain advantage. And I knock back the statement that India’s Modi Government is doomed by the developments.
The other panellists are Raja Faisal and Farrukh Pataki. The host is Sana Maqbool.
ORIGINAL ENTRY, AUG 27: I joined a panel on the Indian TV outlet News 9 to analyze Donald Trump’s 50% tariffs on India, which came into effect at 12:01 a.m.
We take apart the Trump Administration’s initial 25% duty on Indian goods and its additional 25% charge, on the pretext of India’s purchases on Russian oil.
We examine the chaos, economic illiteracy, and hostility behind the punishment. And we consider how India can respond at home and abroad.
This is Trump’s bullying. He and his advisors operate like an organized crime syndicate, trying to shake countries down.
They have decided that because India is not grateful enough to Donald Trump, especially over the clash with Pakistan in April, they are going to punish it.
The other panellists are Ambassador Jayant Dasgupta, Dilip Chenoy of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and Professor Rakesh Mohan Joshi. The host is Kartikeya Sharma.
