In between, I explain why the recognition of the State of Palestine is important amid Israel’s ongoing mass killing in Gaza. I talk about the financial problems for the UK Government, affecting public service such as the provision of day care.

Regarding Trump’s journey around his Scottish golf courses and meetings with Scottish First Minister John Swinney, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen:

When you are facing a bully, a convicted felon, and someone who is illiterate on vital issues, do you boycott him or engage with him?

On this occasion, you have to engage not with Donald Trump personally, but with the office of the US President.

However, you do so not by bowing or bending the knee but by standing your ground.

On the issue of statehood for Palestine, spurred last week by France’s recognition:

Recognizing the State of Palestine does not replace the need for the ceasefire. It amplifies the need for the ceasefire.

If you do not put the marker down, you kick the can down the road recognizing Palestinians and their right to security within a defined state.
