I joined BBC Radio Scotland on Monday to evaluate this week’s trip by Donald Trump to Scotland and the best way to respond to his ego and threats.

Trump is visiting his two golf courses from Friday to Sunday. Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney says he will see the reality TV star, but the Scottish National Party’s leader in the House of Commons, Stephen Flynn, has said, “I’ll be busy getting a haircut or washing my hair – and finding any excuse possible to make sure I’m looking after my own toddlers at the time.”

I explain to the BBC that it may be necessary to see Trump, given his tariff threats, Ukrainian and European security, and the effects of his stances on issues such as migration and climate change.

However, I emphasize that there should be no bowing down to the wannabe monarch. Instead, I point to the position of Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney: “Elbows Up”.
