On Friday gunmen attacked worshippers at a Sunni mosque in Egypt’s northern Sinai Peninsula, killing at least 305 people.

Who is behind the attack? What are the causes, from long-standing conditions in the Sinai to groups linked to the Islamic State? Will the Egyptian regime’s reaction, which has already included airstrikes, resolve or worsen the situation?
