George W. Bush speaks in New York City, October 19, 2017

I spoke with Monocle 24’s The Briefing on Friday about the remarks of former Preisdents George W. Bush and Barack Obama expressing concern over Donald Trump and the state of US society, including call-outs of bigotry, incitement to hatred, division, and spurious nationalism.

Donald Trump is not going to stop being Donald Trump. If anything, he is going to be reinforced in his belief that he is right and that Democrat Barack Obama, whom he despises, and Republican George W. Bush are flat-out wrong. It’s Trump’s way or the highway.

But the message that Bush and Obama are putting out is wider, not to have an effect on Donald Trump but to have an effect on the American public.
