BBC Radio 5 Live asked me to join them on Friday morning, following their interview with Donald Trump’s British “superfan” John Mappin, to offer some perspective.

A hotel owner in Cornwall, Mappin is a self-declared “political analyst” who collected £110,000 ($141,700) on a bet that Trump would win the Republican nomination and then Presidency in 2016. That attention led to an invitation to a GOP fundraiser last month where he met Trump and his wife Melania for a few minutes. Mappin was quite impressed, talking about Trump’s humility, warmth, kindness, intelligence, and ability to listen.

My response begins with the note, “There is image and then there is reality,” to talk about Trump’s actions, the Russia investigation, and the White House failures over legislation: “Trump will likely be gone by next June”.
