PHOTO: Mourners at one of the funerals of victims of Sunday’s shootings at an Istanbul nightclub

I spent Monday doing interviews with BBC outlets considering the significance of Sunday’s shootings at an Istanbul nightclub that killed 39 people

The conversations on BBC Breakfast TV, BBC World TV, and BBC Radio Foyle put the actions of the lone gunman, and the subsequent claim of responsibility into wider internal and external contexts. There is the decades of conflict around the Kurdish question. There are the consequences of the Syrian conflict. And there is President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s quest for expanded power and the challenges that it faces.
