The latest US episode of police killing of an African-American man, followed by protests and unrest, is happening in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Amid a second night of demonstrations following Tuesday’s shooting of Keith Lamont Scott, one person was critically injured and is on life support. The Governor of North Carolina has declared a state of emergency.

I spoke with BBC Radio Wales about the developments and the wider context, reflecting that this is an ongoing cycle rooted not only in the killings but also in deeper economic and social issues causing frustration and division over decades.

There is also conversation about whether protesters will turn blame on President Obama, and whether Donald Trump will exploit the situation in his quest for the White House.

There are clearly large groups in the US, especially in the African American community, who feel they have not made the advances that they wanted to make over decades, since the Civil Rights Movement. The police confrontations, and sometimes the killing of African American men, are the catalyst to bring those frustrations into the open.
