There has been a great deal of interest in the British media about the latest sideshow in Donald Trump’s circus campaign for the US Presidency — the appearance of Nigel Farage, former head of the UK Independence Party, in Mississippi on Wednesday night.

There are superficial reasons for Trump sharing the podium with Farage. Both men like to get attention, and the Trump campaign wants to portray itself as the underdog that will triumph over the “Establishment” — just like the Brexit campaign to take the UK out of the European Union won against the odds in June.

But, beyond the superficial, it is mostly bemusement why Nigel joined the Donald. Bemusement for the Mississippi audience — who were “slightly puzzled” to be greeted by this Englishman talking about “walking boots”. And bemusement for me, wondering why Trump would spend money and time in a state which is supposed to be solid Republican, rather than a swing state which could be the difference in November.

Plus bemusement at the people I encountered during a series of BBC interviews today. The lengthy Radio 5 Live discussion also features a conspiracy theorist who warns of the “dark forces” of the “secret US Government” and a self-professed “University-educated” man explaining how Muslims are trying to take over America.
