An Iranian MP has survived an assassination attempt in Kermanshah Province in western Iran.

Four gunmen attacked a car with Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, the MP for Eslamabad-e Gharb, on Sunday.

A fellow MP said Falahatpisheh was uninjured, but the driver and the head of the area’s Veterinary Department were killed. The Governor of Dalahou County and the Director General of the fisheries of Kermanshah were wounded.

The attackers were not identified. Iranian officials said they fled after burning the vehicle in which they were traveling.

There has been an escalation in clashes between Iranian security forces and Kurdish insurgents in northwest Iran in recent weeks. Last month, the Revolutionary Guards said five “terrorists” from the PJAK were killed near the Turkish border, and last week Iranian officials said another 13 insurgents were slain.

Iranian officials, including the Supreme Leader, have carried a high-profile campaign warning of the “terrorist” threat across Iran while promising that it will be confronted.

Earlier this month, State TV featured the 2confessions” of two men said to be Islamic State members who were plotting attacks against 50 targets in Tehran and other cities. Last week Ayatollah Khamenei linked his repeated caution about “sedition” within Iran to his denunciation of a US, British, and Israeli “plot” to spread terrorism throughout the Middle East.
