PHOTO: “No one knows what it’s like to be the sad man, to be the bad man”

Following her portrayal “Mr Trump Takes Over the GOP“, I asked Rachel Berman of Pencil Politics for her cartoon vision of Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad.

She has responded with the image of a man who has killed hundreds of thousands of his citizens, yet at times appears confused and sad — though without regret — about how exactly he reached this position in Syria’s five-year conflict.

I thought of the song by the Who, “Behind Blue Eyes”, while drawing him. You know the lyrics: “No one knows what it’s like to be the sad man, to be the bad man behind blue eyes.”
