The UN Security Council has unanimously approved a resolution for the removal of sanctions on Iran, following last week’s nuclear deal between Tehran and the 5+1 Powers.

The 14-page resolution was written in Vienna as part of the July 14 comprehensive agreement, in which Iran’s nuclear facilities will be limited and inspected over the next 10 years.

The Security Council resolution covers only UN sanctions and not those imposed by the US and European Union. The US-EU restrictions are to be lifted once the International Atomic Energy Agency verifies Iranian compliance with the agreement.

The European Union also approved the nuclear deal on Monday.

The resolution takes effect in 90 days. It does not cover an embargo on purchase or sales of arms by Iran, which will last for another five years, or on ballistic missile technology, restricted for eight years.

The provisions also set up a process for re-imposition of sanctions if Iran does not abide by the terms of the deal.

Zarif Hit Backs at US Talk of “Military Option” Following Nuclear Agreement

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has lashed out at the US Government after Washington said that a “military option” remains against Iran, even after last week’s nuclear deal.

Zarif told State news agency IRNA on Monday, “At a time when the world considered last week’s agreement in Vienna the victory of diplomacy over war and violence, unfortunately, there still are people who speak of the illegal and illegitimate use of force to achieve their delusional objectives.”

The Foreign Minister was responding to US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter who told reporters on Sunday, en route to Israel, “One of the reasons why this deal is a good one is that it does nothing to prevent the military option.”

Zarif chided Carter:

These individuals do not seem to be able to understand that the use of force to violate others’ rights is not an option, but a dangerous and injudicious temptation.

[Talk of force] is often put forth by those who lack the necessary capacity and capability to manage, push forward and consolidate diplomacy.

Zarif will appear before Parliament on Tuesday to respond to questions about the nuclear agreement.
