Turkey’s police have fired tear gas and water cannon and detained students protesting in support of Syrian Kurds in the besieged town of Kobane.

The police dispersed demonstratations on the Middle Eastern Technical University (ODTÜ) campus, and seized 25 people at Ankara University.

Around 20 students were detained, as well as five professors who were trying to prevent their rough treatment by police.

One woman was injured when she was hit in the face by the pressurized stream from a water cannon truck.

Classes on Ankara University’s main campus have been cancelled on Friday.

Earlier on Thursday, 28 people were detained at Istanbul University following a clash between students and suspected members of the Muslim Youth, a fundamentalist organization which has expressed support for jihadists in Syria.

At least 21 people were killed on Tuesday in east and southeast Turkey amid protests over Kobane. Most of the victims were killed in fighting between the right-wing Hizbollah and Kurdish supporters.
