Iran has detained The Washington Post correspondent in Tehran, Jason Rezaian (pictured); Rezaian’s wife, Yeganeh Salehi; and two freelance journalists.

US officials and the Post confirmed the detentions on Thursday. The Iranians have posted no information about charges.

Rezaian became The Post’s correspondent in 2012 when Thomas Erdbrink moved to The New York Times. He is known in particular for his enthusiastic and engaging reports on Iranian culture, although he also covers political developments.

Rezaian, through his reporting, is also an advocate of US-Iranian rapprochement and engagement. His latest article, on Monday, was on an Iranian baseball tournament:

The correspondent is a dual Iranian-American national. Salehi is an Iranian national who has applied for US citizenship.

The other journalists have not been named.

Hamid Babaei, a spokesman for the Iranian mission at the United Nations, said that Iranian diplomats are looking into the detentions.
