“Someone in Iran has gotten wobbly about the talks. Why?”

1. Unnamed “Western diplomats” have been telling a favored journalist that reports of a positive offer by Iran at the Geneva talks two weeks ago are exaggerated.

2. The Supreme Leader does not trust the Americans.

“Put those two points together. You have a potent combination which will not advance the talks, but could scupper them.”

  1. I beg to differ, Scott.
First of all the content of Iran’s nuclear proposal has not been published yet. On the other hand Khamenei is surely not ready to make any concessions in the nuclear case. After Rouhani’s return to Iran the hardliners and IRGC started to attack him because of his phone call with Obama and for being too permissive. The new anti-US campaign is a further proof for Khamenei’s unwillingness to settle the nuclear problem.

In fact Iranian experts believe that he allowed Zarif to make mock proposals just in order to reduce biting sanctions. In contrast to Khomeini the Supreme Liar has no unlimited authority in foreign affairs. He is much too dependent on his IRGC cronies making big profits of sanctions and unwilling to give up huge revenues from illegal trade in favour of an improved economic situation.

The most recent proof for this: “Enrichment to 20 percent is continuing,” state news agency IRNA quoted Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the head of parliament’s national security and foreign policy committee, as saying on Saturday. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/10/27/us-iran-nuclear-idUSBRE99Q01G20131027
