On Monday, we analysed the “Growing Presence of the Islamic State of Iraq” in Syria, with the faction vying with other insurgents — from the Free Syrian Army to the Islamist Jabhat al-Nusra — to gain influence from small towns to the largest city in the country, Aleppo.

In that analysis we noted an article in Damascus Bureau on the “Islamic Emirate” in Jarablos in northern Syria: “Rather than pointing to a conclusion of triumph or defeat for the ISIL, it shows how a number of factions — including, in this case, Kurdish groups — continue to be involved in the contest for power in post-Assad territory.”
