The battle in Aleppo, Syria’s largest city, is not just between military forces. The provision of vital public services, food, and water has become part of the contest between the Assad regime and insurgent groups.

Footage posted by activists on Tuesday shows children lining up to get water from a truck in Aleppo’s As-Shaar neighborhood. A local man complains about the situation and asks for change.

In another video from As-Shaar, local people line up for aid as the narrator explains that the wait is long because so many need assistance.

In this video, also posted Tuesday, a local Islamist “government” sends workers to repair electricity cables in Karm al-Jazmati, Aleppo. The neighborhood is very close to Aleppo International Airport, and has sustained heavy fire from regime warplanes and artillery.

Other footage from Karm al-Jazmati shows a local supporter setting up a system to distribute daily bread to local residents. The footage shows residents — mostly children — using vouchers or notes to obtain freshly-baked pitta bread from the donor, who has a ledger to keep track of his activities.
